Tomatoes and Pepper Plants

Two years ago I went to help my father plant his tomato and pepper plants. He said he could not get started until he had Mom’s special recipe. I scratched my head. I never remember using a special recipe when planting with him as I was growing up. So I asked mom. Here is her special recipe.

  • 3/4 cup 13-13-13
  • 1/2 cup powdered milk
  • 1/2 cup Epsom Salt

Mom said to use two tablespoons per each plant mixed in the soil at the bottom of the hole where you are planting. I cannot seem to find any science on this when I Googled it. It seems like there were more people on the side of using Epson salts and powdered milk than against it. However Dad’s plants have always done much better than mine…and since we do everything else the same way, I cannot help to think that this might be the reason why.

Of course if you are ever really curious on what your soil needs, you could have a soil test done. See my last post on this.
